Artist statement:
Soil Music is an adaptive sound work based around the imagined sound of soil, where the music adapts as moisture level changes are detected by the sensor in the soil. The work illustrates a connection to nature literally, from the probe in the ground changing the music heard in the headphones, but it is also heavily mediated by technology, rendering it, in a sense, unreal. The music presents an immersive yet idealised version of nature inspired by the heavily manipulated field recordings of Irv Teibel’s Environments series, popular in the 1970s. Akin to hearing to the sea in a shell, Soil Music isn’t the sound of the soil, but a series of enveloping responses that change with the ground below.
